From the Kitchen Table to the Whiteboard: Why We Founded Central Coast Maths Club

If you’ve ever sat across from your child at the dinner table and felt that "maths-induced" tension rising, please know: we’ve been there too.
Our journey didn’t start with a business plan; it started with my oldest daughter, who is now in Year 12. Back when she started at our local high school in Year 7, I began to notice a shift during homework time. It wasn’t just "huffing and puffing"—there were flying pens and genuine distress. It was then I realized she wasn’t just being a "typical teenager"; she was hitting a physical and emotional wall with mathematics.
Bridging the Knowledge Gaps
As I stepped in to help, the reality became clear: there were significant knowledge gaps. Whether it was the disruption of the COVID years or simply concepts that didn’t "click" in a busy classroom, she was struggling to make sense of the foundations.
I found myself balancing the chaos of daily life—cutting up vegetables for dinner in one moment and explaining the logic of basic algebra the next. I even went as far as downloading the NESA Maths Syllabus myself, determined to understand exactly what was required to support her. We pulled through those early high school years together, but it opened my eyes to how many other local students were likely feeling that same "maths anxiety."
By the time my daughter reached Year 9, I began tutoring my friends' children. Last year, I decided to make it official, and Central Coast Maths Club was born.
Built on Parental Values
Our identity as parents is baked into every decision we make at the Club:
The "Rule of Four": We limit our groups to four students because we know our own kids thrive in small, social settings. Very often, every child at the table is confused by the same concept. Suddenly, they realize they aren't alone. The mindset shifts from "Why didn’t I know this?" to "Let’s learn this together!"
Professionalism Meets Empathy: We treat our students with the respect they deserve as young adults, while maintaining the nurturing, "safe-to-fail" environment we’d want for our own family.
Resilience over Rote Learning: We want our students to be problem solvers in life, not just in textbooks. We teach them that "getting it wrong" is simply the first step toward getting it right.
Join Our Club
We founded this club to be the bridge between frustration and mastery. We invite your family to join ours, replace the "pen-throwing" moments with genuine "aha!" moments, and build the confidence your child deserves.
